Your own packshot files are now prepared before they are delivered

A file you add with Upload Own or Use Original is now converted and signed before it can be downloaded. While that happens its tile says so, and if it fails you can try again or remove it, with your file kept.

When you add a packshot of your own, with Upload Own or Use Original, we convert the file and put our signature on it before it reaches you. Until now the file you uploaded could be offered for download while that was still in progress, and in a few cases it stayed that way: unconverted and unsigned. From now on a packshot is only available once its prepared file is ready.

While your file is being prepared, its tile shows Preparing your file… in place of the image. It usually takes a few seconds, and the tile turns into a normal packshot on its own, without reloading the page.

When you replace a packshot's file, the current one stays on screen and can still be downloaded, marked Replacing with your new file…, until the new one is ready.

If a file cannot be prepared, the tile shows We couldn't prepare your file, with two actions:

  • Try again sends the same file for preparation once more. Your file is kept, so you do not need to upload it again.
  • Remove removes the packshot. For a failed replacement it discards the new file, and the packshot keeps its current one.

Two related changes:

  • Files that carry a record from another tool which no longer verifies are now accepted. Some editing software leaves a signed record in the file that stops matching it after a later edit. Such a file used to reach you without our signature. It is now signed like any other, and the original record travels inside it as its source, with a note that it did not verify. The one exception is a file in a format our signing cannot carry a source in: it is still signed, and the packshot records that its original record was left out.
  • HEIC photos from an iPhone are converted to JPEG in your browser before upload, so they are prepared like any other photo.

If you read packshots through the API, a packshot that is being prepared is listed as in progress, and one whose preparation failed as failed. Neither is listed as complete.
